HELIX POND 1MILE AND 3 K RACES

JUNE 2025

by Izzie Burnett

I hadn’t been aware of these races in Falkirk but apparently the inaugural ones were just last year.  Organised by Falkirk Victoria Harriers, it’s a very accessible venue with ample car parking, room to warm up, no traffic and a small hub with toilets and indoor space.

As I hadn’t raced a mile for 3 years, I was keen to see how I would fare, and since I had never done a 3k race I decided to be a glutton for punishment and enter that as well!

The two race distances are each split into two races depending on your projected finishing time, the faster runners going second in each distance. It makes for more space for racing as all the running is done round the Helix Pond and therefore being close to the inner line is preferable.

The 1 mile race is two circuits of the pond plus 50 metres; the 3k race is 4.2 times round the pond.

There were 41 finishers in the mile and 57 in the 3k. I suspect I might have been the only one doing both distances, so a total of almost 100 runners.

FVH used ProTay chip timing and had prizes for 1st male and female plus highest age-graded performance.   They are a very friendly, welcoming club and I would encourage anyone to give this event a go next year.  It’s a relatively small event and a great way to spend a Friday evening before your usual end-of-the-week celebratory juice!
