January 2019 Training

Carnegie Harriers Training – JANUARY 2019

Here are details of our training sessions for the months of January and February. More detailed information can be found on our website: www.carnegie-harriers.co.uk/training/

Please note that sessions may be changed or cancelled at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances, such as bad weather, problems with the venue etc.

It can be more difficult to be motivated to get out and run, especially in inclement weather and on dark evenings. One of the benefits of being a member of a running club is that it’s much easier to run in company.

Non Members Welcome

Non-members are welcome to come along to try out our sessions anytime. Don’t worry if you don’t understand some of the technical details, the sessions are explained in more detail on the night. Also, don’t be put off by description of the sessions, you need only do as much as you want or feel able.

If you are planning to come along for the first time, we would ask that you contact us first, preferably by email to [email protected]  and let us know a little about your experience as a runner, such as how often you train, how far and what pace, also any recent race times. We can then provide you with a bit more information on the club and arrange to meet you on the night.

As we aim to start the sessions promptly, please make sure you turn up in good time so that we can say hello before we hear the pre-session briefing.

Session Aims

We are now well into our winter training programme when the emphasis is on building a good base in preparation for races later in the year. We’re building strength and endurance through a combination of hill based sessions and tempo runs. However, we don’t forego speed work entirely and there are some shorter speed repetitions to keep you on your toes.

The number of repetitions and the pace at which they are to be run are for guidance only. If you are tapering before, or recovering after, a big race, or returning from illness/injury or just had a really bad day, you can reduce the number of repetitions, or the pace, or both.

Session Details

Although we’ll be based on both nights at Pitreavie Sport and Soccer Centre, there will be alternative meeting points closer to the session starts for anyone who feels the run there and back is a bit too far, or would take too long.

During January, on Tuesday evenings we’ll start off training in the Public Park (close to the main railway station) meeting at the bandstand for longer hill repetitions, before moving on to tempo runs, starting off from Pitreavie.  On Thursdays, we’ll meet at Pitreavie before heading over to the Industrial Estate for some speed (around 5k pace) repetitions.

The session start times listed are the times we leave from Pitreavie Sport and Soccer Centre to head to the specified venue on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The training sessions proper start approximately 20 minutes later and anyone going direct to the session starting points on either evening is asked to make sure they leave time to warm up properly before the sessions start.
